Description
Shown from the posterior (dorsal) aspect of a male hand, the deep fascia (fascia dorsalis manus) forms a thin, compliant fibrous sheet superficial to the extensor tendons as it spans the dorsum from the distal forearm across the metacarpals toward the proximal phalanges. Long extensor tendons (extensor digitorum, extensor indicis, extensor digiti minimi) course distally beneath this fascial layer, broadening into dorsal digital expansions over the metacarpophalangeal joints, while the metacarpal shafts sit deep to the tendinous plane as faint bony landmarks. Proximally, the fascia blends with the antebrachial fascia near the wrist and relates to the extensor retinaculum region, creating a defined transition from forearm to hand. Orientation is clear. Dorsal is up. This dorsal fascial view matters because the hand’s extensor mechanism is superficial and vulnerable, and the fascial planes guide both spread of infection and surgical dissection.
