Description
Sectioned like a wedge-shaped lobule, the model centers on a classic hepatic lobule organization with a central vein (terminal hepatic venule) positioned centrally and portal tracts (portal triads) arranged peripherally at the lobular corners. Branches of the portal vein and hepatic artery course in the portal areas, while interlobular bile ducts sit alongside them within the same connective tissue sheath. Green channels within the parenchyma suggest bile canaliculi draining toward the periphery, opposite the direction of sinusoidal blood flow toward the central vein. Countercurrent physiology made visible. Bile duct anatomy at the lobular level matters because cholestatic disease is often a disease of compartments: hepatocellular bile formation begins in canaliculi between adjacent hepatocytes, then funnels into canals of Hering before reaching interlobular bile ducts in the portal tract. That portal-based outflow explains why portal inflammation and bile duct injury dominate many biopsies, from primary biliary cholangitis to allograft rejection, and why bile plugs and ductular reaction cluster at the lobular edge in obstructive patterns.
