Description
Seen from an axial, superior-to-inferior cut through the cranial cavity, the anterior and posterior ethmoidal arteries track from the orbit medially through the ethmoidal foramina at the frontoethmoidal suture, then course inferiorly toward the superior nasal cavity and anterior cranial fossa dura. Branches fan across the cribriform plate region to supply the nasal septum and lateral nasal wall, while proximal segments lie adjacent to the medial orbital wall and the ethmoid air cells. Posteriorly and centrally, larger intracranial vessels converge toward the arterial polygon, with venous sinuses suggested in blue along the dural reflections and inner table grooves. Relationships are clear. The ethmoidal system sits anterior and medial relative to the internal carotid circulation and superior to the nasal cavity proper. This vantage point matters when you need to connect orbital vascular anatomy to epistaxis and anterior skull base surgery. Injury to an anterior ethmoidal artery during endoscopic sinus surgery or medial orbital decompression can retract the vessel into the orbit, producing a rapidly expanding orbital hematoma with acute vision threat, and the illustration helps you anticipate that retraction path across the lamina papyracea.
