Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male head and upper neck are rendered translucently to expose the skull, upper cervical vertebrae, and an overlaid lymphatic network. Superficial and deep lymphatic vessels course along the mandibular margin toward the submental and submandibular nodes, then continue inferiorly to the upper deep cervical chain adjacent to the internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath region. Posteriorly, the posterior auricular and occipital nodes feed into posterior cervical chains that descend along the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid toward the supraclavicular fossa. Bead-like nodal stations cluster where clinicians expect them. Lymphatic drainage of the head and neck drives staging and treatment planning in mucosal squamous cell carcinoma, thyroid malignancy, melanoma of the scalp, and oropharyngeal infection. A lateral x-ray style view makes the posterior cervical nodes easier to localize relative to the mastoid, occiput, and transverse processes, which matters when planning a selective neck dissection (levels II to V) or interpreting ultrasound and CT reports describing upper jugular versus posterior triangle disease. Small detail, big consequence. The arrangement also reinforces why scalp and posterior auricular infections can present with tender nodes behind the ear or along the posterior triangle.
