Positioned high on the posterior abdominal wall, the right and left kidneys lie lateral to the vertebral column with their superior poles oriented toward the diaphragm and their inferior poles tapering toward the upper lumbar region. Each renal hilum faces anteromedially, where the renal pelvis funnels into the ureter, and both ureters descend inferiorly along the psoas major toward the pelvis.
