Description
Rendered on a male anterior thorax in three quarter orientation, the paired pectoralis major muscles lie immediately deep to the superficial fascia and skin, forming the dominant contour of the chest from the parasternal region laterally toward the shoulder. Superior fascicles arise from the medial clavicle, while broader sternal and costal fibers originate from the sternum and costal cartilages, then converge laterally to form a thick tendon at the lateral lip of the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus. Fiber direction is readable across the muscle belly, with the clavicular head running inferolaterally and the lower sternocostal bundles coursing superolaterally as they spiral toward the insertion. The anterior axillary fold is clearly implied. For teaching functional anatomy, this angle makes the pectoralis major’s twisted tendon and layered fiber architecture easier to explain than a flat orthographic view. That matters clinically: the pattern of tendon failure at the humeral insertion, often seen in weightlifting injuries during the eccentric phase of bench press, correlates with the inferior sternocostal fibers and their lateral convergence. Surgeons also rely on the surface footprint and anterior axillary fold when planning deltopectoral approaches and when raising a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap for head and neck reconstruction.
