Description
Posterior thigh anatomy is rendered with the gluteus maximus superiorly and the hamstring group emphasized along the dorsal femur. The long head of biceps femoris lies laterally, while semitendinosus and semimembranosus track more medially, forming the superficial and deep contours that descend toward the knee. Proximally, these muscles converge toward the ischial tuberosity, then run inferiorly over the posterior compartment with tendinous expansions becoming more apparent near their distal insertions. Adjacent compartments are partially visible at the margins, with hints of adductor musculature medially and anterior thigh mass laterally around the femoral shaft. Clinical teaching lands well on this view because it clarifies why the proximal hamstrings are a common site of sprinting injuries and avulsions from the ischial tuberosity, and why ecchymosis can track distally along the posterior thigh after a tear. Lateral emphasis on biceps femoris also supports discussions of knee pain patterns and the relationship between hamstring tightness and altered pelvic tilt in low back complaints.
