Description
Cut through the anterior skull, the frontal section opens the nasal cavity from roof to floor, with the nasal septum in the midline separating right and left chambers. Laterally, the maxillary sinuses occupy the body of each maxilla, inferior to the orbit and lateral to the nasal cavity, while the ethmoidal air cells cluster more superiorly and medially between the nasal cavity and the orbit within the ethmoid labyrinth. Curved nasal conchae project from the lateral walls, creating superior, middle, and inferior meatuses that sit medial to the maxillary sinus walls and beneath the cribriform region of the anterior cranial base. Mucosa lines each air space. Frontal section anatomy is the working map for endoscopic sinus surgery because it clarifies the narrow corridors where chronic rhinosinusitis and obstruction develop, particularly around the osteomeatal complex of the middle meatus and the ethmoidal infundibulum. The close relationship of the ethmoid to the lamina papyracea explains why orbital complications can follow ethmoiditis and why breach during ethmoidectomy risks orbital fat herniation or extraocular muscle injury. Dental roots may approximate the floor of the maxillary sinus. That matters in odontogenic maxillary sinusitis and during sinus lift procedures for implants.
