Description
Seen in lateral profile on an adult male, the temporalis muscle forms a broad fan over the temporal fossa, spanning from the inferior temporal line superiorly down toward its deep tendon as it passes medial to the zygomatic arch. Anteriorly, its fibers approach the lateral orbital margin and frontozygomatic region, while posterior fibers sweep back toward the squamous part of the temporal bone. Inferiorly, the muscle converges toward the coronoid process of the mandible, lying superior to the masseter and lateral to the cranial vault. Functionally, this lateral view clarifies why the temporalis is more than a simple jaw closer: its anterior fibers elevate the mandible, and its posterior fibers retract it, a distinction that matters when teaching occlusal mechanics and when interpreting patterns of muscle hypertrophy in bruxism. Palpation and injection planning also depend on surface relationships, because the superficial temporal artery and auriculotemporal nerve traverse the temporal region just anterior to the ear, and iatrogenic injury is a real concern during temporomandibular disorder interventions.
