Description
Viewed laterally, the hand skeleton is presented from the radial to ulnar side, bringing the stacked profile of the carpal bones into alignment with the metacarpals and phalanges. Proximally, the carpus forms the wrist contour and continues distally into the metacarpal bases, where the shafts arc toward the metacarpophalangeal joints. Distal to the knuckles, the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges step forward in sequence, with the thumb distinguished by only proximal and distal phalanges and its more anterior, radial position. Articular cartilage is indicated in blue along the carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal, and interphalangeal joint surfaces. A lateral hand view earns its keep when you need to teach or plan around sagittal-plane relationships, including how metacarpal head shape and phalangeal base orientation guide flexion and extension at the MCP and IP joints.
