Proximally, the carpus forms the wrist contour and continues distally into the metacarpal bases, where the shafts arc toward the metacarpophalangeal joints. Distal to the knuckles, the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges step forward in sequence, with the thumb distinguished by only proximal and distal phalanges and its more anterior, radial position. Articular cartilage is indicated in blue along the carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal, and interphalangeal joint surfaces.
