Description
Viewed from an inferolateral angle on the right side, the temporal bone dominates the field, with the zygomatic process projecting anteriorly toward the zygomatic bone and its temporal process to form the zygomatic arch. Inferior to the squamous part, the external acoustic meatus opens laterally, while the mastoid process sits posteroinferior to the meatus as a broad, palpable prominence. Medial and slightly anterior to the mastoid region, the styloid process descends as a slender spike, separated from the mastoid process by the stylomastoid region. Orientation landmarks align cleanly. This perspective matters when teaching the temporal bone as a surgical and clinical crossroads: the stylomastoid foramen adjacent to the styloid base marks the exit of the facial nerve (CN VII), a key landmark in parotidectomy and in localizing Bell palsy versus more proximal lesions. Otologic approaches also pivot on these surface cues, since the external acoustic meatus and mastoid cortex guide mastoidectomy planning and help relate mastoid air cells to the middle ear and sigmoid sinus region. The zygomatic process provides a hard landmark for temporomandibular joint orientation, and it frames where the temporalis muscle transitions deep to the arch.
