Description
Seen in profile, the nasalis muscle spreads as a thin sheet across the lateral nose, with its transverse part (compressor naris) coursing superomedially over the nasal cartilages and its alar part blending inferiorly with the soft tissues of the ala. Anteriorly it lies superficial to the lateral nasal cartilage and the major alar cartilage, while posteriorly it approaches the maxilla near the piriform aperture; fibers interdigitate with the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi and the dilator naris region. A semi-transparent skull overlay clarifies bony reference points, including the nasal bone, maxilla, orbit, zygomatic arch, and mandible with dental arcades, with the hyoid and upper cervical vertebrae receding inferiorly. For teaching and procedural planning, this lateral perspective makes the mechanics of nostril narrowing and widening easier to explain, because you can track how the transverse nasalis can reduce the external nasal valve area while the alar fibers influence the rim of the nostril.
