Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the scapula lies posterior to the rib cage with the clavicle projecting anteriorly toward the acromion, and the proximal humerus sits inferior and lateral to the glenoid cavity at the shoulder joint. The teres minor is highlighted along the posterior scapula, arising from the lateral border of the scapula and coursing laterally to the greater tubercle of the humerus, tucked deep to the posterior deltoid region. Nearby bony landmarks that orient the muscle include the acromion superiorly and the spine of the scapula posteriorly. Small muscle. Big landmark. Teres minor is the rotator cuff’s posterior-inferior cuff component, and this lateral perspective helps clarify its line of pull for external rotation and posterior stabilization of the glenohumeral joint when the arm is abducted. Clinically, it matters in axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery relationships around the quadrangular space (bounded by teres minor superiorly and teres major inferiorly), and in interpreting fatty infiltration or atrophy patterns on shoulder MRI, where isolated teres minor involvement can point toward quadrangular space syndrome.
