Description
Coracoid process projects anterolaterally from the superior border of the scapula, curving like a hook anterior to the glenoid cavity in a fixed lateral shoulder-girdle perspective. Its base sits just superior and medial to the glenoid rim at the scapular neck, while the tip points forward and slightly inferior, creating a palpable landmark deep to the anterior deltoid. Lateral to the coracoid, the acromion overhang and proximal humeral region provide orientation for the subacromial space. Bone surface detail is prominent. Orthopedic relevance concentrates at the coracoid as a nexus for stabilizing soft tissues and reconstruction. The conjoint tendon (short head of biceps brachii and coracobrachialis) arises from the coracoid tip, with the pectoralis minor inserting on its medial border, and the coracoacromial ligament spanning to the acromion to form the coracoacromial arch, a boundary implicated in external impingement and rotator cuff abrasion. Fractures at the coracoid base are uncommon but clinically consequential because the coracoclavicular ligaments (conoid and trapezoid) anchor near this region and their involvement can alter management of acromioclavicular separation; the same bony segment is harvested and transferred in the Latarjet procedure to address recurrent anterior glenohumeral instability with glenoid bone loss. Small target. Big consequences.
