Description
Sectioned in lateral profile, the male ocular globe is opened to relate the anterior segment to the equator of the eyeball. The cornea continues posteriorly into the sclera, which forms the outer fibrous coat, while the vascular uvea (choroid) lies deep to it and the retina lines the inner wall, curving toward the posterior pole. Internally, the vitreous body occupies the central cavity posterior to the lens position, with fine intraocular vessels suggested within the coats. Spatially, the anterior pole sits opposite the optic nerve region at the posterior pole, and the equator marks the widest transverse diameter between them. A lateral cutaway like this matters when you need to teach ocular layers as true concentric tunics rather than flat diagrams. It also maps cleanly onto clinical examinations and procedures: retinal detachment occurs between the neurosensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium, choroidal effusions collect in the suprachoroidal space, and scleral thinning changes the contour of the globe. The equator is a practical landmark for surgery and trauma, since many scleral buckling elements and extraocular muscle insertions are described relative to the equator, and posterior segment pathology often respects this anatomic geography.
