Description
Gluteal tuberosity occupies the proximal posterolateral femoral shaft, immediately inferior to the greater trochanter and lateral to the linea aspera, where its rough longitudinal ridging stands out against the smoother cortical surface. From this fixed lateral perspective, the ridge tracks inferiorly along the upper third of the shaft, blending medially into the lateral lip of the linea aspera while remaining posterior to the vastus lateralis muscle bed. The greater trochanter forms the superior bony landmark, and the subtrochanteric region is visible distally as the shaft narrows. Enthesis at the gluteal tuberosity anchors the deep fibers of gluteus maximus, so its contour matters when teaching hip extension mechanics and when interpreting traction-related cortical changes. Orthopaedic readers will recognize this zone as a tactile landmark during lateral and posterolateral approaches to the proximal femur, and as part of the surface anatomy referenced when placing cerclage cables or evaluating subtrochanteric fracture patterns that propagate along the posterior shaft and linea aspera.
