Description
Arising from the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage and the lateral surface of the cricoid cartilage, the inferior pharyngeal constrictor forms a broad, fan-shaped muscular sheet along the posterolateral pharyngeal wall in lateral view. Its fibers sweep posteriorly and medially to meet the pharyngeal raphe, lying posterior to the laryngeal framework and superior to the cervical esophagus. Superficial landmarks include the sternocleidomastoid anterolaterally and the carotid sheath contents, with the common carotid artery medial to the internal jugular vein. The trachea sits anteriorly, while the esophagus tracks posterior to it and continues inferiorly beneath the constrictor. This angle matters because the inferior pharyngeal constrictor is not a single functional unit. The thyropharyngeus and cricopharyngeus parts form the gateway between hypopharynx and esophagus, and dysfunction at the cricopharyngeus underlies upper esophageal sphincter disorders and contributes to Zenker diverticulum at Killian dehiscence, just superior to the cricopharyngeal fibers. Surgeons and trainees also track the relationship of this muscle to the recurrent laryngeal nerve in the tracheoesophageal groove and to the superior laryngeal nerve entering the larynx near the thyrohyoid membrane. Small margins matter. Use this illustration when teaching swallowing mechanics in head and neck anatomy, speech and swallowing pathology, or ENT surgical anatomy, and when preparing figures for papers on dysphagia evaluation, cricopharyngeal myotomy, or hypopharyngeal tumor spread.
