Description

Oriented in a lateral profile, the upper limb is rendered with the deltoid draping the proximal humerus and the biceps brachii forming the dominant anterior contour of the arm, with its belly tapering distally toward the cubital fossa. Posterior to it, the triceps brachii outlines the extensor compartment along the dorsal arm, separated from the biceps by the lateral intermuscular septum. The humeral shaft sits centrally, continuing into the elbow where the radius lies lateral to the ulna, and the biceps tendon can be followed toward its insertion on the radial tuberosity, passing deep to the bicipital aponeurosis. Carpal, metacarpal, and phalangeal bones anchor the distal forearm musculature in a way that makes tendon trajectories easy to track. A lateral view is the cleanest way to teach how the biceps brachii relates to the elbow’s axis of rotation and why forearm position changes its mechanical advantage. Supination demands an intact distal biceps tendon, and this illustration supports discussion of distal biceps rupture, where the tendon retracts proximally and patients lose supination strength more than pure elbow flexion.
