Description
Arcing anterolaterally from the femoral region toward the iliac crest, the superficial iliac circumflex artery is traced as a slender branch of the external iliac or proximal femoral system as it courses parallel to the inguinal ligament. Superficial fascia and the lateral hip musculature frame the vessel, with gluteus maximus lying posteriorly and the tensor fasciae latae and proximal iliotibial tract positioned more anterior and lateral. The artery approaches the anterior superior iliac spine, then follows the crest where its small-caliber branches spread across the superficial tissues. Fine arterioles are suggested within the subcutaneous plane. For groin and hip surgery, this artery is a practical landmark and an avoidable source of bleeding. It is the vessel most often encountered during lateral extension of inguinal and Pfannenstiel incisions, during port placement near the anterior superior iliac spine, and when elevating skin flaps over the iliac crest, where it can be tethered and torn. Its course also overlaps common donor sites and perforator-based flap planning, and it matters when you teach surface anatomy of the femoral triangle and the transition from external iliac to femoral vessels beneath the inguinal ligament. Small vessel. Real consequence. Common applications include anatomy lab manuals and surgical atlases covering the inguinal region, sports medicine texts discussing lateral hip approaches, and radiology teaching files when correlating Doppler or CT angiography of superficial circumflex branches with incision planning. Medical device and procedural training teams can also use this view to illustrate safe corridors for minimally invasive access around the iliac crest and anterolateral hip.
