Description
Tympanic part of the temporal bone forms the osseous wall of the external acoustic meatus, and in lateral view its smooth, curved tympanic plate can be followed as it wraps anteriorly and inferiorly around the canal’s opening. Superior to the tympanic margin, the squamous part contributes to the lateral cranial wall, while posteriorly the tympanic ring approaches the mastoid region where the canal transitions toward the petrotympanic fissure area. Anteriorly, the tympanic plate lies just posterior to the mandibular fossa and temporomandibular joint, a tight spatial relationship that explains why TMJ pathology can refer pain toward the ear. Otoscopy and canal instrumentation depend on understanding the bony third of the external acoustic meatus, where the skin is thin and tightly adherent to periosteum, making abrasions and osteitis more likely than in the cartilaginous segment. Temporal bone trauma is another practical context: fractures traversing the tympanic part can narrow the canal, lacerate the tympanic membrane attachment at the tympanic sulcus, or present with hemotympanum and conductive hearing loss, and the lateral perspective clarifies which bony margins are at risk near the canal entrance and tympanic ring.
