Description
Choroid fissure anatomy is centered on the narrow cleft along the medial wall of the lateral ventricle, positioned between the superior surface of the thalamus (inferiorly) and the body of the fornix (superiorly). From this medial perspective, the fissure traces a gentle anteroposterior curve where the tela choroidea and attached choroid plexus would be encountered at the ventricular margin, deep to the overlying limbic arch. Spatially, the fornix sits superior and slightly medial to the thalamus, creating the corridor that opens into the ventricular cavity while remaining bordered by diencephalic tissue inferiorly and cerebral white matter superiorly. Neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists care about this fissure because it defines a natural, pial-lined plane used to access intraventricular and periventricular targets without transgressing thalamic parenchyma. A common teaching point is that the choroid fissure is the route by which the choroid plexus invaginates into the lateral ventricle, and it also relates to vascular structures that run in the roof of the third ventricle and along the fissure (including choroidal arteries and the internal cerebral venous system). A tight, fixed medial viewpoint helps clarify what is truly superior (fornix) versus inferior (thalamus) at the ventricular interface. Small distances matter. Neuroanatomy instructors can place this illustration alongside coronal and axial ventricular cross-sections to anchor orientation of the diencephalon, fornix, and ventricular roof in a single frame.
