Description

Medial aspect of the right foot is rendered with the cuneiform region isolated in context among the midfoot and forefoot bones. The highlighted cuneiform lies distal to the navicular and proximal to the base of the first metatarsal, forming a key segment of the medial longitudinal arch. Distally, the proximal phalanx, middle phalanx, and distal phalanx align in series at the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints, while the metatarsals extend proximally toward the tarsus. Articular margins are indicated at the tarsometatarsal complex and along the interphalangeal joints. Short and blocky. From a medial perspective, the cuneiform’s wedge geometry is easiest to appreciate and teaches why small shifts at the naviculocuneiform and first tarsometatarsal joints can alter load transmission through the hallux ray. This is the corridor relevant to hallux valgus mechanics, midfoot sprain patterns, and arthrodesis planning for first tarsometatarsal instability in Lapidus procedures. Clinicians also reference these surfaces when correlating dorsal midfoot pain with naviculocuneiform osteoarthritis, where joint space narrowing and osteophytes often localize. Use this plate in gross anatomy and podiatric medicine teaching to anchor discussions of tarsal bone orientation, arch support, and joint line identification, and in orthopedic or radiology publications describing Lisfranc region anatomy and medial column alignment. It also works well in patient education for bunion surgery or midfoot arthritis consultations, where a clear medial map of the cuneiform-metatarsal relationship reduces ambiguity. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
