Posteriorly, the male upper limb is oriented around the humerus proximally, with the olecranon of the ulna forming the most prominent bony landmark at the elbow and the radius lying lateral to the ulna as both descend to the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges of an open hand. Across the dorsal arm and forearm, you would expect the triceps brachii to occupy the posterior brachium, with the long head running along the medial aspect and the lateral head more laterally, converging distally toward the olecranon. Distal to the lateral epicondyle, the extensor mass of the forearm occupies the posterior compartment, with tendinous slips coursing toward the dorsum of the wrist and digits. Biceps brachii is also included, making its anterior position clear even when viewed from behind. Posterior arm anatomy is where elbow extension becomes anatomically legible, and this view helps separate triceps function from the lateral forearm extensors that act on the wrist and fingers. Clinical localization often hinges on this distinction: radial nerve injury in the spiral groove can weaken triceps and wrist extension, while a lesion distal to the elbow more commonly spares elbow extension but produces wrist drop and finger extension deficits. The relationship of the triceps tendon to the olecranon is a key landmark. So is the lateral epicondyle, the usual origin for extensor carpi radialis brevis in lateral epicondylitis. Works well for posterior upper-limb teaching in gross anatomy, kinesiology, and surface anatomy labs, and for illustrating exam findings in radial neuropathy, lateral epicondylitis, or triceps tendon rupture in textbooks and clinical handouts.
