Posterior femoral anatomy dominates the field, running from the diaphysis with its linea aspera down to the distal metaphysis and the medial and lateral condyles. Along the posterior shaft, fragmented fracture segments interrupt the ridge of the linea aspera and extend toward the popliteal surface, where the bone flares before the intercondylar fossa. Inferiorly, the tibial plateau sits distal to the femoral condyles, with articular cartilage capping the joint surfaces; the menisci and cruciate ligaments are suggested deep within the intercondylar region. Multiple fracture lines at or near the distal femur matter because they sit close to structures that dictate both stability and limb risk: the supracondylar region transmits large bending forces, and posterior displacement can threaten the popliteal artery and vein tethered in the popliteal fossa. Malalignment here changes knee biomechanics quickly, so even small degrees of varus, valgus, or rotational deformity can translate into altered patellofemoral tracking and early post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Reduction is unforgiving. Posterior comminution also influences fixation strategy, from locked plating to retrograde intramedullary nailing, and it explains why CT is often requested to map the fracture morphology beyond what a lateral radiograph suggests. Orthopaedic trauma courses and anatomy teaching labs use this kind of posterior view to correlate bony landmarks (linea aspera, condyles, intercondylar fossa) with common fracture patterns and the soft-tissue structures at risk. It also suits surgical atlases discussing approaches around the distal femur and knee, and patient-education materials explaining why intra-articular extension and cartilage injury worsen prognosis.
