Description
Posterior female neck anatomy is presented with the nuchal region (regio nuchae) centered over the midline cervical spine, where the vertebrae cervicales create a palpable row of spinous processes from the external occipital region inferiorly toward the cervicothoracic junction. Lateral to this midline ridge, the posterior triangle contours are implied by the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid anteriorly and the anterior border of trapezius posteriorly, with the superior nuchal line and external occipital protuberance forming the superior bony landmarks. Superficial soft tissues overlie the nuchal ligament and the deeper posterior cervical musculature, creating the characteristic slope from the occiput to the shoulders. Clear midline landmarks. These surface relationships matter in day to day clinical examination of the cervical spine, because posterior midline tenderness, step-offs, or abnormal prominence of a single spinous process guide suspicion for fracture, subluxation, or focal deformity after trauma. The cervicothoracic transition, where C7 often forms the vertebra prominens, is a frequent reference point for counting levels for imaging correlation and for planning posterior approaches to the cervical spine. Palpation along the nuchae also helps distinguish muscular spasm in trapezius and splenius from focal bony pain over the spinous processes.
