Description
Posterior surface anatomy of an adult male is rendered with the superficial venous network traced over the back, upper limb, gluteal region, and lower limb. Across the posterior calf, the small saphenous vein ascends in the midline from the lateral marginal vein of the foot, running between the heads of gastrocnemius toward the popliteal fossa, where it typically drains into the popliteal vein. Proximally, superficial tributaries course over the gluteus maximus and posterior thigh, skirting the hamstrings (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially) and continuing toward the posterior knee. Superficial pathways over the posterior shoulder and arm align with the cephalic and basilic territories and their connections around the elbow. Landmarks matter. A posterior view of superficial veins is the workhorse perspective for correlating venous return with surface landmarks during standing examination, where dependent venous filling and varicosities become most apparent. The small saphenous vein and its variable junction at the saphenopopliteal junction are central to planning endovenous ablation or surgical ligation, and errors here explain persistent reflux after treatment. Perforator incompetence along the posterior calf can also be mapped against these superficial routes when teaching chronic venous insufficiency patterns.
