Description
Viewed from a superior perspective, the fifth cervical vertebra (C5) presents the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral foramen centrally, bounded posteriorly by the laminae that converge toward the base of the spinous process. Laterally, the pedicles transition into transverse processes containing the transverse foramina, with the uncinate processes rising along the superolateral margins of the vertebral body. Paired superior articular facets sit posterolaterally, oriented to receive the inferior articular facets of C4 and guide segmental motion. C5 matters because it sits near the most mobile portion of the subaxial cervical spine, where facet orientation and uncovertebral anatomy shape both normal rotation and degenerative patterns. Uncovertebral osteophytes at C5 to C6 and C4 to C5 commonly narrow the intervertebral foramen, contributing to cervical radiculopathy that can mimic shoulder pathology and complicate physical exam localization. In anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, C5 is also a reference level where endplate preparation, uncinate resection, and foraminotomy decisions hinge on an accurate mental map of the vertebral body margins, transverse foramen location, and facet alignment. Use this superior view in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching to connect bony landmarks to the course of the spinal canal and exiting nerve roots, and in spine surgery or radiology publications where level-specific morphology needs clean, unambiguous labeling.
