Description
Oriented from a superior perspective, the T11 vertebra is centered on the broad vertebral body anteriorly, with the vertebral arch curving posteriorly to enclose a foramen that begins to assume a more lumbar-like outline at the thoracolumbar junction. Pedicles form the anterolateral margins of the vertebral foramen, transitioning into laminae that meet posteriorly at the base of the spinous process. Transverse processes project laterally from the junction of pedicle and lamina, while the superior articular processes sit posterolaterally, flanking the foramen and defining the superior zygapophyseal (facet) joints with T10. T11 matters because it sits just above T12 and marks the start of a functional transition from thoracic rotation to lumbar flexion and extension, a change reflected in the widening canal and the changing facet orientation. Clinically, this level is a frequent reference point when counting vertebrae on CT or MRI to localize the thoracolumbar junction, and it is relevant in burst fractures from axial load, where retropulsed bone can narrow the vertebral foramen and threaten the spinal cord or conus medullaris depending on individual variation. Clear identification of the pedicles and superior articular processes also supports safe planning for posterior instrumentation, where pedicle screw trajectories demand respect for the canal medially and the costovertebral region nearby.
