Description
Iliac ala (iliac wing) dominates this superior perspective of the hip bone, with the iliac crest forming a broad curved rim that sweeps anterolaterally to posterolaterally. Medially, the ala approaches the sacroiliac region, where the auricular surface and adjacent iliac tuberosity lie closest to the midline, while the iliac fossa occupies the inner aspect of the wing. Anterior and posterior superior iliac spines define the ends of the crest, setting the palpable boundaries of the greater (false) pelvis. Bone contours are the focus. Understanding the superior topography of the ala matters whenever the iliac crest is used as a surface landmark or surgical corridor, because the crest height helps establish Tuffier’s line for lumbar puncture and neuraxial anesthesia planning. Orthopedic and trauma teams also reference these contours when describing pelvic ring injuries and iliac wing fractures, and when selecting donor sites for cancellous or corticocancellous iliac crest bone graft. The fixed overhead viewpoint separates the medial sacroiliac side from the lateral flare of the wing, making iliac crest curvature, iliac tubercle region, and the breadth of the fossa easier to teach without distraction from the acetabulum and proximal femur. Use this illustration in gross anatomy labs, musculoskeletal anatomy courses, and exam-prep materials that test pelvic orientation and bony landmarks by palpation. It also suits orthopedic and sports medicine publications discussing iliac apophysitis, iliac crest graft harvest, pelvic brim orientation, and procedural landmarking in anesthesia and pain medicine. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
