Description
Brodmann area 6 spans the superior frontal lobe immediately anterior to the precentral gyrus (primary motor cortex, BA4) and extends medially onto the superior frontal gyrus toward the interhemispheric fissure. From a superior perspective, its lateral premotor cortex occupies the dorsal convexity, while the supplementary motor area (SMA) lies more medial and superior, bordering the paracentral lobule near the midline. The central sulcus and precentral sulcus form key posterior and anterior limits, respectively, anchoring BA6 in relation to the primary motor strip. BA6 matters because motor deficits often arise from impaired planning and initiation rather than loss of strength alone. Infarction in the superior division of the middle cerebral artery can involve lateral premotor cortex and present with ideomotor apraxia, impaired complex movements, and difficulty selecting motor programs despite preserved basic power; medial involvement in the anterior cerebral artery territory can produce SMA syndrome, with contralateral akinesia and speech initiation deficits that can mimic primary motor lesions.
