Anterior clinoid processes project posteromedially from the lesser wings, while the posterior clinoid processes rise from the superior angles of the dorsum, framing the pituitary fossa between them. From this superior perspective, the hypophyseal fossa sits centrally, with the planum sphenoidale and chiasmatic sulcus anterior and the clivus beginning just posterior to the dorsum sellae. Bony margins read cleanly. For endocrinology and neurosurgery, this region matters because the pituitary gland rests within the hypophyseal fossa and enlarging pituitary adenomas remodel the sellar floor and clinoid contours, with proximity to the optic chiasm across the chiasmatic sulcus.
