Description
Rendered as a transverse cross-section through the female breast, the parenchyma is organized into lobulated mammary gland tissue embedded within abundant subcutaneous adipose, with fibrous Cooper ligaments radiating toward the dermis. A discrete acute hematoma occupies part of the glandular and adjacent fatty compartment, sitting superficial to the pectoralis major fascia and chest wall while remaining deep to the areola and nipple complex. Lactiferous ducts converge anteromedially toward the nipple, and small arterial and venous branches course between lobules and septa around the collection. Edema and local tissue displacement are evident. Acute breast hematoma most often follows blunt trauma, needle biopsy, vacuum-assisted core sampling, or surgery, and it is amplified in patients on anticoagulants or with coagulopathy. On mammography and ultrasound, a hematoma can mimic malignancy by creating a new palpable mass, focal asymmetry, or complex cystic lesion, so understanding its typical anatomic compartment, relationship to Cooper ligaments, and evolution toward liquefaction and fat necrosis matters when planning short-interval follow-up versus aspiration. Surgeons also care about whether the collection tracks along fascial planes toward the retromammary space or remains confined within the superficial parenchyma, since that dictates drainage access and the risk of skin compromise.
