The common carotid ascends in the neck and bifurcates into external and internal carotid arteries, with external carotid branches tracking anteriorly and superiorly toward the face, scalp, and orbit while the internal carotid courses deep toward the cranial cavity. Superficial veins accompany these arteries and converge inferiorly toward the internal jugular system, and cranial nerve branches radiate across the cheek, lips, and temple in predictable anterior, posterior, and superior trajectories. Relationships are the point. Arterial and neural adjacency in the face and neck drives both symptom patterns and procedural risk. Close apposition of the facial artery and vein with the buccal and marginal mandibular branches of the facial nerve helps explain why lacerations near the mandibular border can combine brisk bleeding with lower lip weakness.
