Primary motor cortex (BA 4) sits on the precentral gyrus, immediately anterior to the central sulcus, while primary somatosensory cortex (BA 3, 1, 2) occupies the postcentral gyrus posterior to it. More anteriorly, prefrontal territories (for example BA 9, 10, 46) span the superior, middle, and inferior frontal gyri, and posteriorly the occipital pole and calcarine region correspond to visual cortex (BA 17 with adjacent BA 18 and 19). Superior temporal plane regions associated with auditory processing (BA 41 and 42) lie on the superior temporal gyrus, with association cortex (BA 22) extending posteriorly. Clinically, Brodmann numbering remains the common language linking surface anatomy to function, neuroimaging reports, and lesion localization even when modern parcellations are available. A left middle cerebral artery infarct that involves inferior frontal gyrus cortex (BA 44 and 45) supports a Broca aphasia pattern, while posterior superior temporal involvement (BA 22) aligns with Wernicke aphasia, and occipital injury affecting BA 17 matches homonymous visual field loss on formal perimetry. Correlating each area to nearby landmarks such as the central sulcus, sylvian fissure, and gyral ridges makes the map easy to translate to operative planning and to MRI or CT slices interpreted at the workstation. Labels matter.
