Description
Arising deep to the clavicle in the anterior shoulder, the lateral cord (fasciculus lateralis) is shown forming from the anterior divisions of the superior and middle trunks as they regroup around the second part of the axillary artery. From this position, the cord lies lateral to the artery and anterior to the subscapularis on the costal surface of the scapula, then continues distally toward the axilla beneath the pectoralis minor. Surrounding landmarks in this anterior perspective include the clavicle superiorly, the proximal humerus laterally, and the anterior scapular region medially, with the deltoid and pectoralis major framing the field. Orientation is clear. Clinically, this anterior view maps cleanly onto the infraclavicular approach used for regional anesthesia and for surgical exposure during axillary vascular repair, where cords are identified by their relationship to the axillary artery rather than by their roots and trunks in the neck. Lateral cord pathology localizes differently than posterior cord lesions, with expected deficits along musculocutaneous-derived functions (elbow flexion, lateral forearm sensation) and partial median nerve contributions, a pattern often considered when evaluating traction injuries, shoulder dislocation sequelae, or iatrogenic injury during axillary node dissection.
