Description
Presented in anatomical position from an anterior full-body perspective, the male superficial musculature is exposed with emphasis on the palmaris longus in the forearm. The small fusiform muscle belly arises from the common flexor origin at the medial epicondyle of the humerus and continues distally as a long, slender tendon that runs superficial and central over the volar forearm, anterior to the flexor retinaculum. Medially it lies near flexor carpi ulnaris, laterally it neighbors flexor carpi radialis, and its tendon blends into the palmar aponeurosis in the proximal palm. Other visible landmarks logically include pectoralis major, deltoid, rectus abdominis, quadriceps femoris, and the patellae, with select bony contours indicated at major joints. Clear. Direct. Palmaris longus matters because it is among the most common anatomical variants in the upper limb, frequently absent unilaterally or bilaterally, and its superficial tendon is a standard surface landmark when teaching the anterior wrist. Surgeons often harvest the palmaris longus tendon for grafting, for example in tendon reconstruction of the hand, ligamentoplasty, or static slings for facial reanimation, so a clear depiction of its course relative to the flexor retinaculum and palmar aponeurosis helps frame both selection and incision planning. Its relationship to median nerve–related anatomy at the volar wrist also makes it useful context when discussing carpal tunnel exposures and safe planes.
