Description
From an anterior perspective, the shoulder girdle and proximal brachium are presented as a clean bony framework, with the clavicle running horizontally from the sternoclavicular region to meet the acromion at the acromioclavicular joint. Lateral to the thorax, the scapula’s glenoid cavity faces anterolaterally to receive the rounded head of the humerus, forming the glenohumeral articulation. Superiorly, the acromion overhangs the humeral head, while the proximal humeral metaphysis continues inferiorly into the shaft of the arm. Spatially, the clavicle sits anterior and superior to much of the scapular body, and the humerus lies lateral to the rib cage. Anterior shoulder osteology matters because it sets the stage for the injuries clinicians see and the approaches surgeons choose. The relationship between the humeral head, glenoid, and acromion frames common pathology such as anterior glenohumeral dislocation, often associated with a Bankart lesion of the anteroinferior labrum and potential axillary nerve risk at the surgical neck. It also clarifies why clavicle fractures most often occur at the junction of the middle and lateral thirds, where transmitted forces meet a change in curvature and ligamentous constraints.
