Description
Arising from the oblique line of the mandible near the mental tubercle, the depressor anguli oris (triangularis) is presented from an anterior perspective as a paired, superficial muscle flanking the chin. Each belly runs superolaterally toward the modiolus at the corner of the mouth, lying inferior to the oral commissure and lateral to the midline of the mentum. In this frontal facial context, the mandibular body and dentition provide bony reference, while adjacent muscles of mastication such as the masseter may be visible more laterally over the ramus. Orientation is straightforward: origin inferior and medial, insertion superior and lateral. Functionally, the depressor anguli oris contributes to depression of the oral angle and assists in lateral shaping of the lower lip through its blending at the modiolus with orbicularis oris, risorius, and depressor labii inferioris. This relationship matters when teaching lower facial expression patterns and when assessing facial nerve dysfunction, where weakness of the marginal mandibular branch can leave the commissure elevated or asymmetric during attempted frowning. Surgeons also track this muscle when planning perioral incisions, local flaps, or botulinum toxin placement for downturned mouth corners, because diffusion into depressor labii inferioris can produce an unwanted lower lip droop.
