Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is rendered through a semi-transparent torso of an elderly white male, with the right and left lungs occupying the lateral pleural cavities and the cardiac silhouette centered in the middle mediastinum. The lung apices extend superiorly toward the thoracic inlet, while the inferior borders slope down to the diaphragmatic domes, leaving the anterior costomediastinal recesses near the cardiac notch on the left. Between the lungs, the heart sits obliquely with the right atrium and right ventricle forming most of the anterior surface, and the left ventricle contributing to the left cardiac margin; the proximal bronchial tree is suggested at the hila, where bronchi and pulmonary vessels enter medially. Age-related thoracic relationships matter clinically because they shape how you interpret an AP chest radiograph and how you plan anterior access to the mediastinum. Small shifts in cardiac size or position can narrow the retrosternal space, and chronic lung hyperinflation in COPD can flatten the diaphragm and make the heart appear elongated and vertically oriented. That context helps when teaching why heart failure commonly presents with basilar crackles and pleural effusions, while anterior lung pathology such as right middle lobe pneumonia can be harder to localize without understanding lobar projections onto the anterior chest wall.
