Description
Centered between the inferior border of the thyroid cartilage and the superior margin of the cricoid arch, the median cricothyroid ligament (median part of the cricothyroid membrane, ligamentum cricothyreoideum medianum) appears as a thickened midline band spanning the cricothyroid interval. Superiorly, it lies immediately inferior to the laryngeal prominence of the male thyroid cartilage, and inferiorly it blends onto the anterior cricoid cartilage and the first tracheal rings. Flanking the median ligament, the paired cricothyroid muscles occupy the anterolateral surface, their fibers running from the cricoid to the inferior thyroid lamina. For airway access, this small patch of midline anatomy carries disproportionate clinical weight. The median cricothyroid ligament defines the target for cricothyrotomy and needle cricothyroidotomy, where a midline approach is chosen to avoid the more lateral superior thyroid vessels and to stay clear of the cricothyroid muscle bellies. Surface landmarks can be deceptive in a male neck with a prominent thyroid cartilage, so a precise anterior perspective on the thyroid cartilage, cricoid arch, and cricothyroid interval helps teach where the membrane is palpated and punctured. Use this artwork in emergency medicine and anesthesia teaching sets on front-of-neck access, or in surgical anatomy modules that contrast cricothyrotomy with tracheostomy at the tracheal rings.
