Presented from the anterior aspect, a short segment of the thoracic or lumbar spinal column is shown with vertebral bodies stacked superior to inferior and separated by intervertebral discs rendered in a pale, silvery-white tone. One vertebral body demonstrates a compression fracture, with a transverse fracture line and loss of anterior vertebral height creating a subtle wedge configuration. Lateral to the vertebral bodies, the pedicles and the bases of the transverse processes are suggested, while posterior elements are largely obscured by the viewpoint. Endplate contour and disc adjacency remain readable around the injured level. Anterior vertebral body collapse is the workhorse pattern of vertebral compression fracture, most often from osteoporosis but also seen after axial loading trauma and in pathologic fracture from malignancy. That wedge deformity matters because it shifts sagittal alignment and can progress to focal kyphosis, increasing adjacent-level stress and pain even when the posterior wall and spinal canal are spared. Radiology and spine services also use the anterior profile to distinguish acute injury (step-off, cortical disruption) from chronic deformity, and to localize levels for vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty planning.
