Description
Frontal orientation is implied by the symmetric orbits and nasal apertures, so the face and anterior neck are arranged around the midline of the skull and cervical region. Superiorly, the supraorbital margins and zygomatic bones frame the orbits laterally, while the nasal bones, piriform aperture, and maxilla sit medial and inferior to the orbital openings. Inferior to the mandible, the hyoid region transitions into the anterior cervical compartment, where the laryngeal cartilages (thyroid and cricoid) and the trachea descend in the midline, flanked by the sternocleidomastoid muscles running obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and clavicle. Symmetry is the point. For teaching, an anterior head and neck plate earns its keep by clarifying midline airway anatomy and the relationships that guide palpation and urgent access. The cricothyroid membrane lies between the thyroid and cricoid cartilages, a short, superficial corridor that becomes the target in cricothyrotomy when oral intubation fails. Carotid pulses, central venous access, and the boundaries of the anterior triangle also make more sense when you can anchor them to the sternocleidomastoid and the larynx-trachea column.
