Description
Presented in anterior aspect, the male femur is rendered from the femoral head and neck through the diaphysis to the distal condylar region. Proximally, the greater trochanter lies lateral to the neck while the lesser trochanter projects posteromedially but remains appreciable by contour near the intertrochanteric line. Multiple fracture lines and comminuted zones are emphasized along the proximal shaft around the subtrochanteric region and extend distally toward the supracondylar area, interrupting the otherwise smooth anterior surface of the femoral cortex. Red callouts bracket the cortical breaches for fast localization. Fracture clustering around the lesser trochanter region matters because this is the transition from the metaphysis to the high-stress proximal diaphysis, where high-energy trauma and pathologic weakening can produce unstable subtrochanteric patterns with a strong deforming pull from the iliopsoas on the lesser trochanter and abductors on the greater trochanter. Reduction is not intuitive. An anterior view also helps teach how sagittal plane angulation and shortening can be inferred when the diaphyseal cortex is disrupted yet the femoral head remains grossly intact, a common scenario in dashboard injuries and falls from height. Use this asset in orthopedic trauma teaching sets on femoral shaft and subtrochanteric fractures, in exam questions that ask learners to name landmarks and predict muscle-driven displacement, or in patient-facing surgical consent materials that explain intramedullary nailing versus plate fixation in the thigh.
