Description
Arising from the lumbar sympathetic trunks and centered on the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery, the inferior mesenteric plexus is rendered as a yellow autonomic nerve network on the anterior aspect of the lower lumbar spine. From this periarterial plexus, fibers descend along the superior rectal artery and radiate laterally toward the left colic and sigmoid branches, tracking the vascular pedicles to the hindgut. The lumbar vertebral bodies form the posterior midline backdrop, while the pelvic ring provides inferior and lateral bony context as the plexus approaches the pelvic inlet. Anterior relationships are emphasized. This anterior perspective matters because it mirrors the operative corridor used in left-sided colorectal and retroperitoneal surgery, where autonomic nerves are at risk during high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery and dissection near the aortic bifurcation. Preserve too little and you can denervate. Injury to the hypogastric nerves and continuation into the superior hypogastric plexus is a known contributor to postoperative urinary and sexual dysfunction, and the illustration helps localize where those fibers run relative to the lumbar promontory and proximal mesenteric vessels. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching to connect sympathetic outflow from lumbar splanchnic nerves to hindgut targets, and in colorectal, vascular, or urologic surgical education when explaining nerve-sparing planes during sigmoid colectomy, low anterior resection, or presacral dissection.
