Description

The external nose (nasus) occupies the midline, with the philtrum descending to the vermilion border of the upper lip, and the chin (mentum) forming the most inferior midline prominence. Lateral to the oral fissure, the cheeks contour over the zygomatic bones, while the parotid region lies posterolateral to the masseter along the mandibular ramus. Surface expression lines imply underlying mimetic musculature, including orbicularis oculi around the palpebral fissures and orbicularis oris encircling the mouth. Anterior facial views are the workhorse for teaching surface anatomy and correlating external landmarks to deeper structures. For procedural planning, midline orientation and symmetry matter when marking incisions for rhinoplasty, cleft lip repair, or local flap design along relaxed skin tension lines around the nasolabial fold and perioral region, where scar visibility and contracture risk are highest.
