Description
Frontal bone anatomy at the nasion comes into focus with the nasal part positioned in the midline, inferior to the glabella and medial to the right and left orbital margins. The notched inferior border corresponds to the ethmoidal notch, which accepts the ethmoid bone superiorly in the anterior cranial base, while the paired orbital margins sweep laterally toward the zygomatic processes. Along the inferior midline, the nasal spine of the frontal bone projects toward the internasal region, approaching the nasal bones and the frontal processes of the maxilla at the frontonasal and frontomaxillary sutures. Surface contour matters here. Clinically, this is the bony junction that anchors common landmarks for trauma assessment and surgical planning, including the nasion and glabella, and it sits just superior to the nasal bridge where frontal bone fractures can extend into the anterior table of the frontal sinus and toward the nasofrontal outflow tract. From an anterior perspective, the relationship between the ethmoidal notch and the medial orbital margins helps clarify how injuries in the naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) complex can disrupt the medial canthal region and the lacrimal drainage pathway, even when external deformity appears limited. The fixed lighting and clean exposure of the bony edges make the notch geometry and suture-adjacent borders easy to interpret for readers who need orientation without soft-tissue distraction. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and head and neck modules to teach craniofacial landmarks, or in radiology and maxillofacial surgery materials to support discussions of frontal sinus outflow obstruction and NOE fracture patterns on CT correlation.
