Description
Temporal lobe cortex occupies the lateral aspect of the cerebral hemisphere and, from an anterior viewpoint, the temporal pole forms a smooth, rounded prominence at the most rostral end of the lobe. Superiorly, the pole approaches the anterior margin of the lateral (Sylvian) fissure, while its inferolateral surface continues into the inferior temporal region. Subtle surface relief suggests the anterior portions of the superior, middle, and inferior temporal gyri separated by shallow sulci that run anteroposteriorly along the lateral convexity. Medially, the bulk of the pole curves toward the floor of the middle cranial fossa, even though the parahippocampal region and uncus are largely beyond the lateral line of sight. Anterior temporal anatomy matters because this is a common corridor for both pathology and surgery. Herpes simplex encephalitis characteristically targets the anterior and medial temporal lobe, and edema here can correlate with acute aphasia, seizures, and behavioral change, making the temporal pole a practical surface landmark when teaching lesion localization. For epilepsy surgery, an anterior temporal lobectomy or selective amygdalohippocampectomy begins with orientation at the temporal pole and proceeds posteriorly along the superior temporal gyrus, so a fixed anterior perspective helps learners appreciate how close the pole sits to the Sylvian fissure and to the skull base. Landmarks are tight. Mistakes are costly. Use this illustration in neuroanatomy and neuroscience courses when introducing cerebral lobes, cortical gyri and sulci, and the concept of the temporal pole as the rostral terminus of the temporal neocortex.
