Presented in anatomical position, three adult Black male figures are arranged in anterior view to contrast ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph somatotypes. Limb length and girth differ across the models, with the ectomorph showing longer-appearing upper and lower extremities relative to trunk width, the mesomorph demonstrating broader shoulders with a narrower waist, and the endomorph showing increased trunk breadth at the abdomen and pelvis. Surface landmarks remain readable across body types, including the clavicles and pectoral region superiorly, the abdominal wall at midline, and the anterior thighs and knees inferiorly. Somatotype plates matter when you need a controlled visual reference for morphology rather than an idealized single “normal” body. In clinical practice, body habitus changes how you estimate surface anatomy and interpret anthropometrics, from waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio to visual assessment of sarcopenia or central adiposity.
