Description
Cut open along its long axis, a segment of descending colon is shown with the mucosa exposed, its normally folded, haustrated surface interrupted by an irregular exophytic malignant mass projecting into the lumen. The tumor rises from the bowel wall and appears to thicken the underlying layers, narrowing the central channel relative to the adjacent, more compliant proximal and distal colon. Mucosal ridges and shallow grooves surround the lesion, highlighting the contrast between relatively orderly mucosa and the disorganized tumor surface. Left sided colon cancer often announces itself by progressive luminal compromise, so an established growth in the descending colon is a practical teaching model for partial obstruction, altered stool caliber, and upstream dilatation. The descending colon’s relatively smaller lumen and more formed stool make circumferential extension clinically conspicuous, and it matches the classic annular, constricting pattern seen on contrast enema or CT as an “apple core” type narrowing. Regional spread follows lymphatics along the left colic vessels toward inferior mesenteric nodes, a point that matters when planning oncologic colectomy margins and mesenteric ligation levels. Gastroenterology and surgical teams use this kind of artwork to explain colonoscopy findings, biopsy rationale, and why a left hemicolectomy may be recommended even when the lesion appears focal endoluminally.
