Description
Curled in a flexed posture typical of the early second trimester, the conceptus at approximately gestational week 14 is presented in profile with the head relatively large compared with the trunk. Facial contours are apparent, with the nasal bridge and tip projecting anteriorly and the mandibular prominence defining the chin inferior to the oral region; the developing external ear sits posterolateral to the jawline. Upper and lower limbs are formed with recognizable segments, the forearm and hand lying anterior to the thorax and the flexed thigh and leg tucked inferiorly toward the abdomen. An umbilical cord exits at the anterior abdominal wall (umbilical ring), courses toward the placental disc, and anchors to the uterine wall. At 14 weeks, proportions and surface anatomy start to align with the sonographic “fetal” period rather than the embryonic stage, so this profile view maps cleanly to what is assessed during first and early second trimester screening. Nasal bone development and mandibular size matter.
